Media And Government Creating Zika Hysteria: What They Aren’t Telling You
With so much fear and misinformation floating around out there regarding the Zika outbreak, it’s little wonder that the media and government’s response each day grows louder and louder–and also more incoherent.
Like a massive game of telephone emerging from admittedly tragic and heartbreaking stories of Brazilian babies born with microcephaly–or seriously underdeveloped skulls and brains–we have gone from “there may be a link between microcephaly and the pregnant women contracting the Zika virus” straight to “ZIKA DEFINITELY CAUSES IT OMG YOU’RE ALL GOING TO DIE IF WE DON’T SPRAY AND VACCINATE IMMEDIATELY!!!”
The government recently rolled out mandatory spraying for an area north of Miami’s downtown, using a chemical called naled, a potent neurotoxin that can cause numbness, headaches, dizziness, tremors, nausea, cramps, blurred vision and difficulty breathing. All to combat a mosquito that may or may not carry a disease that may or may not cause microcephaly and which 80 percent of people who contract it are so little bothered by its mild effects that they never even know they are infected.
And it’s really disappointing to see the media so eager to roll over and play dead on this one, although that really shouldn’t be all that surprising given how thoroughly they’ve disgraced themselves going full throttle during the Bush years, and how the corporations have simultaneously gutted newsrooms across the nation.
Still, there are facts, provable facts that just don’t fit with the narrative we are being asked to swallow on this.
• The link between Zika and microcephaly is tenuous at best. The virus has been identified for nearly 50 years, and only this spring did stories linking it to microcephaly emerge. There are zero cases in West Africa where the disease is common. There has been far too little testing to countenance some claims that are starting to trickle out now purporting to prove a certain link between the two. We just don’t know this yet.
• There is a proven link, however, between microcephaly and the overuse of pesticides. Perhaps not coincidentally, the region where the microcephaly cases occurred in Brazil are home to some of the most profligate spraying operations in the hemisphere.
• There is also a real and demonstrable link between microcephaly and certain vaccines. As Natural Solutions Foundation Medical Director Dr. Rima Laibow put it in a recent white paper on the Zika outbreak: “There is absolutely no credible evidence that the Zika virus has ever, since its identification and registration by Rockefeller Institute scientists in 1967, been associated with any birth defect, including microcephaly. The TDaP and DTaP vaccines, on the other hand, are excellent candidates for all sorts of birth defects, including microcephaly.”
And yet, here we are: spraying of entire city blocks with demonstrably dangerous chemicals, to prevent a disease that 80 percent of those infected don’t even notice, to combat a possibly spurious link to a condition found in some infants only recently and only in one part of the world, with no research looking at any other cause. Not to mention the reports of health officials in Florida going door to door in some neighborhoods demanding residents give them urine samples.
When will this madness end?
