SPLC: (Former) Anti-Govt Group Keeping Tabs on Anti-Govt Groups

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) founded in 1971* was a major force during the later part of the Civil Rights Movement, during the last third of the 20th Century. Since at least the mid-1990s the Center has kept track, and count, of what its leadership considered “active antigovernment groups.” The “Intelligence Project’s” 2015 listing was recently made public, revealing the types of groups singled out by SPLC.

By the numbers, the Report can be reduced to two charts. One a map of the American states, showing the number of targeted groups in each state. The other, a time graph, indicates the changing number of organizations on SPLC’s purported “enemies” list over time. [Note: we believe the use of the word “foes” in the first screenshot below is possibly a typographical error.]

The state with the largest number of “active groups” is Pennsylvania with 60. California, Texas and Ohio are all above 50. In the 40’s we find Virginia, Missouri and New York.

From near the end of the Clinton era and through the Bush2 era, ending at the start of the Obama era, the above chart shows a significant reduction in the SPLC’s leadership estimation of “active anti-government groups” in the United States.

The Report** includes a state-by-state listing of the claimed “active” groups.

We at OpenSourceTruth are particularly interested in the types of groups listed. They span a range from small local militia groups through national organizations such as the Oath Keepers. The list jumbles together armed groups with public advocacy groups. It does not appear to include any groups affiliated with either of the ruling political parties. The list does include a number of well-known health freedom advocacy groups, such as Natural News and InfoWars.

Maj. Gen. Albert N. Stubblebine III (US Army, Ret.) President of the Natural Solutions Foundation (not on the list) when interviewed earlier today regarding the Active Groups List commented,

“As a proud Oath Keeper, I completely reject the notion that those of us who took, or reaffirmed, an oath to defend the Constitution are “anti-government.” I believe that I am the highest ranking retired Officer to take that Oath with the Oath Keepers. We are profoundly and intensely anti-tyranny and stand enthusiastically for good governance.

I am disappointed in the shift in SPLC policy and position from its honorable past and urge the SPLC to rethink the listing criteria. I remember, and I would urge them to remember as well, their past honored service to civil rights. This list is a travesty and a grave disappointment in what the SPLC has allowed itself to become.”
