Swimming In Unhealthy Food Choices, But Here Are Some Things To Avoid To Keep From Drowning
It’s almost laughable how horrible for you the food is in a typical western diet.
Or at least it would be laughable if it weren’t so tragic. You can’t drive down a main street in any U.S. town without being inundated with brightly colored signs advertising all manner of junk food–and that’s just the restaurants. Walk in to any grocery store and witness the walls of sugary soda and deep-fried, preservative-laden, genetically modified, partially-hydrogenated garbage that surround you.
If an alien species were to land with no knowledge of us, based on a trip to the grocery store they would assume we were a suicidal species.
But as horrible as much of our so-called food selection is, there are certain things that are worse than others. Here are some of the most egregious offenders, and why you should avoid them at all cost.
- Farmed salmon – Mainstream thought has it that farmed salmon is pretty much okay, and that it may even be better environmentally due to massive overfishing, but don’t buy the hype. Farm-raised salmon is fed an unnatural diet of grains, along with heavy doses of antibiotics to keep the fish alive in the unnatural, filthy and unhealthy pens in which they spend their entire lives. The chemicals, vitamins, and other drugs that are pumped into these animals accumulate in your system, dangerously so, to the point where New Zealand, Australia and even Russia have banned their sale.
- GE papaya – Most Hawaiian papaya is genetically engineered to resist a disease called ringspot. And while people will tell you there is nothing to fear from eating GMO foods, the truth is study after study show that animals fed GE grains suffer intestinal damage, organ damage, tumors, and birth defects. Hawaiian papayas are considered so dangerous and compromised the E.U. has banned them outright.
- Ractopamine- tainted meat – Ractopamine is an asthma drug that is routinely fed to cattle, pigs and turkeys as it has been found to be a powerful muscle enhancer. Trouble is, it remains in the meat you buy at the store, up to 20 percent of it. and it is poison: over 1700 people have been poisoned from eating ractopamine-laced pork in the last 20 years. It can be found in 45 percent of U.S. pork and 30 percent of ration-fed cattle. If you want an idea of how bed it really is, consider that even China has banned the chemical. Yet another reason to avoid factory-farmed meat.
- Flame retardant in sports drinks – Brominated vegetable oil was first developed for use as a flame retardant, but now it can be found in citrus-flavored beverages and especially sports drinks. Despite having been approved for human consumption by the FDA in 1977, subsequent studies have shown that it bioaccumulates in human tissue, especially breast tissue, and subsequently breast milk. It is known to cause reproductive problems and behavioral issues in large doses.
