“Getting shots” for your child is by now treated as a routine function. The doctor’s office calls, you sigh, but you make you appointment, dreading the tears and fussing and likely grumpiness for the rest of the day to follow.
And you figure it will be an annoyance but that life will go on as before.
However, for hundreds of thousands of parents it is anything but. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System or VAERS run by the FDA and the CDC and created by Congress in the early 1980s to run interference for vaccine-makers fearful of lawsuits from families of the children they might damage–has around half a million reported “events” in its system.
But the shocking statistic buried within is that nearly 6 percent of these reactions in children receiving five or more vaccines during one visit resulted in death.
In light of these alarming statistics, medical research journalist Neil Z. Miller has come out to warn parents that this all-too common practice of administering multiple vaccines in one visit is dangerous–and that it can even be fatal.
“Our study showed that infants who receive several vaccines concurrently…are significantly more likely to be hospitalized or die when compared with infants who receive fewer vaccines simultaneously,” Miller said. “It also showed that reported adverse effects were more likely to lead to hospitalization or death in younger infants.”
Certainly these are numbers you would think the CDC and doctors would like parents to know about before they consider bringing in their for one big series of shots. No amount of money saved on doctor visits is worth the life of you child, surely.
But even more reason this seems like information that should be shared and not buried is that the numbers reflect that the dangers ratchet down precipitously when you lower the number of vaccines a child is given at one go.
Indeed, 5.4 percent of reactions were fatal in infants who received five or more vaccines at once; that number falls to 3.6 for those children getting four or fewer shots.
What’s worse is that experts say the data suggests that vaccine reactions are under-reported on a vast scale. Former FDA commissioner David Kessler has been quoted as saying that “…only about one percent of serious events [adverse drug reactions] are reported.” So the actual number of deaths from multiple vaccine doses could conceivably be considerably higher than the rates that are reported.
At the very least, parents should be informed of what chances they are taking with their children’s lives. There is nothing routine about a 5.4 percent chance of death if your kid has an adverse reaction, no matter what your doctor and the CDC say.
