Five Years After The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, A Cluster Of Babies Born With Extra Limbs, Other Severe Side Effects
It’s only been five years after the Fukushima nuclear accident, but that is a lifetime in terms of the genetic damage nuclear radiation can do. For some babies and new parents among the local residents, those lifetimes may be very short, painful and tragic indeed.
People from the area, even outside the 12-mile exclusion zone, are reporting a massive uptick in serious birth defects. A recent broadcast on LaborNet TV featured interviews with people who were evacuated from the affected areas near the shuttered nuclear plant, and they related harrowing stories of babies being born with extra limbs, likely caused by a birth defect called polymelia.
Polymelia is not at all common, and it often strikes children who started as an embryo as conjoined twins. In this scenario, one of the twins degenerates completely except for one or two limbs, with which the surviving sibling is born.
But it is an exceedingly rare condition, and for a cluster of babies to be born with it in one area would be alarming under the best conditions. To have it happen at a much higher rate than normal so near to the site of a nuclear disaster like Fukushima, especially when the exclusion zone is such a tight radius is truly frightening. For comparison, after Chernobyl, the exclusion radius the Soviets and international scientific community settled on was 18 miles, not the paltry 12 miles surrounding Fukushima.
The people who were interviewed also reported an unusual number of stillbirths, as well as pregnancies that were terminated, explained by doctors as “inconvenient pregnancies.” They made it clear that birth defects had been detected in utero, prompting the doctors to recommend termination of the pregnancies.
One woman who was interviewed for the program, Setsuko Kida, said, “My daughter [got] pregnant in the fall of 2013, but she was diagnosed with tethered miscarriage…the womb grew…but her unborn baby didn’t grow at all. So she had the abortion. My daughter called and told her friend about her abortion…She was told that out of four in her friends group, three, including herself, had abortions during early pregnancy. The only one who could give birth was told by her doctor that she was unable to give birth because of the baby’s weak heart.”
While of course this is strictly anecdotal evidence of a serious problem in the area, combined with other facts it begins to paint an alarming picture, one which it seems like many people would prefer remained obscured.
There have only been two known studies made available that looked at the changes in death and disease rates in the region following Fukushima. But tellingly, both of those indicate a marked increase in thyroid cancer and other thyroid problems in children.
One study demonstrated that 127 Fukushima-area children have developed thyroid cancer since the nuclear disaster. The expected number of cases for a population of children of the size that was studied would be between five and ten.
Another study showed a number of ectopic intrathyroidal problems in local children, an extremely rare disorder.
And that’s it. No other studies examining changes in infant death rates, premature births, cancers in children or any other radiation-related disease are available.
It certainly smells like a cover-up by Japanese authorities. And you know what they say, if it walks like a radioactive duck, and it quacks like a radioactive duck…
